Climbing the 700 year-old walls of Ston, Croatia to see the incredible views of the town and the salt fields was one of the highlights of my Adventures Croatia island hopping cruise. Ston is famous for its oyster farms, its salt fields, and the stone walls that have protected the salt fields for centuries. In fact, you may recognize "The Great Wall of Croatia" from Game of Thrones. It is Europe's longest fortress complex and is the second longest fortress complex in the world behind The Great Wall of China. Construction started in the 14th century and continued for two centuries. Earthquakes and the Croatian War for Independence have damaged the walls of Ston over the centuries, and in 2004 reconstruction began and the walls were reopened for tourists in 2009.
