The Czech Suite in D (Ceská suita D dur), Op. 39 was composed by Dvorák in 1879 and premiered by Adolf Cech.
Dvorák had only recently become introduced to Fritz Simrock by Johannes Brahms but had already become displeased with several of his new publisher's business practices, including releasing older works with high opus numbers, implying they were new.
He offered this work, recently written, to Simrock with a somewhat earlier number (that of works he'd written a few years before) as part of his response.

The Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34, by Johannes Brahms was completed in 1864. It was dedicated to Princess Anna of Hesse. Like most piano quintets composed after Robert Schumanns, it is written for piano and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello).
The piece is in four movements. The work began life as a string quintet (completed in 1862).
Brahms worked it into a sonata for two pianos (in which form Brahms and Carl Tausig performed it) before giving it its final form. Brahms destroyed the original version for string quintet, but published the Sonata as Op. 34 bis. The outer movements are more adventurous than usual in terms of harmony and are unsettling in effect.
The introduction to the finale, with its rising figure in semitones, is especially remarkable. Both piano and strings play an equally important role throughout this work.

Frédéric Chopin composed this set of three Ecoissaises for piano solo in 1826. They were published after his death, in 1855, as no. 3 of Op. 72 (a posthumous release which also included a nocturne and a funeral march).
The Ecoissaises are lively contradances, inspired in the tradition of the Scottish dances that were popular in the continent.

The Slavonic Dances are two sets of pieces (Op. 46 and Op. 72) written by Antonín Dvorák in 1878 and 1886 respectively.
Though originally composed for piano four hands, the publisher asked Dvorak to orchestrate the pieces right after publishing them, and in their orchestral form they quickly became famous.

Frédéric Chopin wrote his Mazurkas, Op. 50, between 1841 and 1842. After the political events in Poland around 1930, Chopin was inspired to honor the culture of his land by incorporating elements of this traditional dance into his compositions.
The result is a blend of folkloric elements and academic procedures. The Op. 50 set of Mazurkas consists of three pieces for solo piano, published in 1842 and dedicated to Leon Szmitkowski.

The Sonata in E flat major for flute or recorder, BWV 1031 (also H. 545) is a work in three movements, usually attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, although some question his authorship of the piece and hold his son Carl Philipp Emmanuel as the true composer.
The work was written around 1730 and it was published only a hundred and thirty years later, in 1860.

This is yet another work by Anderson that efficiently depicts a scene, something made possible only by the composers deep understanding of instrumentation used for reproducing lifelike sounds: at the end of Sleigh Ride, for example, we hear a trumpet whine like a weary horse, and here in The Waltzing Cat, the strings cleverly depict the cats meow.
The work opens with a lazy but chipper waltz theme played by the strings, whose use of portamento on key notes creates the meow effect. The middle section is reminiscent of cartoon music, with lots of playful, cat-and-mouse-like action.
The main theme returns in all its colorful nonchalance and charming meows in the latter half close out this charming work.

The Ballades, Op. 10, were some of the finest examples of lyrical piano music written by Brahms during his youth. They were dated 1854 and were dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm.
Their composition coincided with the beginning of the composers lifelong affection for Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann, who was helping Brahms launch his career. Frédéric Chopin had written the last of his famous ballades only 12 years earlier, but Brahms approached the genre differently from Chopin, choosing to take its origin in narrative poetry more literally.
Brahmss ballades are arranged in two pairs of two, the members of each pair being in parallel keys. The first ballade was inspired by a Scottish poem Edward found in a collection compiled by Johann Gottfried Herder.
It is also one of the best examples of Brahmss bardic or Ossianic style; its open fifths, octaves, and simple triadic harmonies are supposed to evoke the sense of a mythological past.
