The Ballades, Op. 10, were some of the finest examples of lyrical piano music written by Brahms during his youth. They were dated 1854 and were dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm.
Their composition coincided with the beginning of the composer's lifelong affection for Clara Schumann, the wife of Robert Schumann, who was helping Brahms launch his career. Frédéric Chopin had written the last of his famous ballades only 12 years earlier, but Brahms approached the genre differently from Chopin, choosing to take its origin in narrative poetry more literally.
Brahms's ballades are arranged in two pairs of two, the members of each pair being in parallel keys. The first ballade was inspired by a Scottish poem "Edward" found in a collection compiled by Johann Gottfried Herder.
It is also one of the best examples of Brahms's bardic or Ossianic style; its open fifths, octaves, and simple triadic harmonies are supposed to evoke the sense of a mythological past.

The Symphony no. 4 in E minor, Op. 98 by Johannes Brahms is the last of his symphonies. Completed in 1885, the piece was first premiered for a private audience in a two-piano version. The symphony is rich in allusions, most notably to various Beethoven compositions.
This last movement is notable as a rare example of a symphonic passacaglia: for the repeating theme, Brahms adapted the chaconne theme in the closing movement of J.S. Bachs cantata, Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, BWV 150. This symphony in four movements is scored for two flutes (one doubling on piccolo), two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani, triangle (third movement only), and strings.

Benvenuto Cellini is an opera in two acts by Berlioz, with libretto by Léon de Wailly and Henri Auguste Barbier.
The first of his operas, it is loosely based on the memoirs of the Florentine sculptor Benvenuto Cellini.
It is technically very challenging and not part of the standard operatic repertoire. However, the overture to the opera features in symphony orchestra programs, as well as the concert overture Le carnaval romain that Berlioz composed from material in the opera.

Chopins second set of Études was published in 1837, and dedicated to Franz Liszts mistress, Marie dAgoult, the reasons for which are a matter of speculation.
Chopins Études were the foundation of a new system of technical piano playing that was radical and revolutionary. They are some of the most challenging and evocative pieces of all the works in concert piano repertoire.
Because of this, they remain popular and are often performed in both concert and private stages.

Frédéric Chopin wrote his set of Mazurkas, B. 16, in 1826, and published them the same year. These are two pieces, in the keys of G and B flat major, without a known dedicatee.
The versions of the first publication were revised versions: the original versions reached the public in print in 1875.
As these pieces dont have a proper Opus number, they are usually referred to as B. 16, S 1/2, and KK IIa/2, according to its entry numbers in the Brown, Chominski, and Kobylanska catalogues respectively.

Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68, by Johannes Brahms was first performed in 1876, conducted by Felix Otto Dessoff, a friend of the composer. It took Brahms at least 14 years to complete, the first sketches dating from 1862.
The long gestation of the symphony may be put down to two factors: on the one hand, Brahms self-critical fastidiousness which led him to destroy many of his early works, and, on the other hand, the expectation of Brahms friends and the public that Brahms would continue Beethovens inheritance and produce a symphony of commensurate dignity and intellectual scope—an expectation which Brahms felt he could not fulfill easily in view of the monumental reputation of Beethoven.
The work is in the typical four movements, scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani and strings.
