Cicadas, No. 2 an original tune on Ðàn môi (Vietnamese jaw harp)

What do you do when it's 100 degrees outside and the Cicadas are about to begin chirping? You record a Cicada tune! ;-) This little tune is comprised of eight layered tracks of Vietnamese jaw harp. The instrument is called the dan moi. You place it between your lips, pluck the end of the instrument, and change pitch by shaping the inside of your mouth using tongue level. The notes it creates are based on overtones. The instrument is very thin and made out of brass. You have to be careful because it can pinch your upper lip!

I learned about this cool little instrument from Adam Rapa, an outstanding trumpet player, who uses the dan moi to practice tongue level exercises to aid in high note development on the trumpet.
