Laguna Churup is the most popular hiking destination near the city of Huaraz, Peru. A narrow paved road with over 40 switchbacks takes you all the way to the 12,630-foot trailhead. From there, the trail climbs 2,460 feet in 2.5 miles to reach the 14,600-foot-high Laguna Churup. For the more adventurous, a scrambler’s route continues farther up the basin to the crystal-clear Lake Churupita, where you’ll get an even better view of Mt. Churup. Sadly, the glaciers that just decades ago reached this lake now remain only along the upper cliff faces. Overall, Laguna Churup is a great place to acclimatize to high altitudes while exploring the beautiful Andes.
