Hello everyone!
Another cover for the VGCovers subreddit (reddit.com/r/VGCovers/). This one is for their January Cover Contest. The theme of the contest is "Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross". Since I have a tendency to do songs that don't get that many covers, I decided to do a metal cover of "Sealed Door" from Chrono Trigger.
For this cover I went with a similar approach to my "Singing Mountain" cover I uploaded in December last year: clean/ambient intro, heavy "verses", bridge before the solo, and guitar harmonies in one of the "verses".
I was originally going to do a slide solo for this cover, but when I was starting to improvise the solo, I couldn't seem to come up with anything that would work on slide, so I just created the solo that is in the video. However, when I had the idea to do a slide solo, I knew that pretty much all of my guitars were not up to do slide, whether it be because of a low action or a floating tremolo system to make it hard to change tuning. My dad has a Japanese-made Vantage from the early 1980s (The serial number leads me to believe it is a 1981 model), which is based off a Gibson ES-335 archtop guitar. Since I like using guitars which you don't normally see in metal (take my other two recent covers as an example with the Stratocaster with noisy single-coil pickups) and that guitar had a slightly higher action and heavier strings than my Ibanez, I figured it would be good for slide, but I still ended up doing a normal heavy blues-y solo.
My dad's Vantage guitar has actually been modified quite heavily. He added an active circuit for a signal boost switch, changed the neck pickup out for a DiMarzio and the bridge pickup for a Bill Lawrence pickup. The Bill Lawrence pickup does an interesting thing with the tone control for the bridge pickup; instead of just rolling off the top end of the guitar signal when the tone is turned all the way down, it gets almost a "cocked wah" effect just from the tone control. You can hear that in the solo.
I also used my Whammy pedal in this cover. It is an older model of the Whammy so it has the glitchy sound when using extreme whammy settings, such as 2 octaves up, which is used in the end of the solo. The newer Whammy pedals, the Whammy DT and Whammy V have polyphonic modes, meaning that you can play chords without the garbled glitchy artifacts in the sound. If you listen closely to the end of the song (about 5:11 in the video) you can hear the harmonising guitar with almost a phasing sound. This is from the Whammy pedal on its "shallow detune" setting. You can get this effect by plugging the guitar into the Whammy pedal, THEN into the distortion pedal/overdriven amp (this is important, it must be before the actual overdriving of the signal) and it creates an interesting phasing sound.
