In this episode of God’s Troll Army, we’re responding to a comment that asks one of the most tired — but revealing — questions in the Christian apologetics playbook:
“Why would an atheist even admit to having a conscience?”
According to our commenter, if there’s no “moral absolute being,” then atheists shouldn’t believe in right or wrong at all. No conscience, no morality — just chaos, selfishness, and murder because… “pond scum evolution.”
Yeah. We’re going there.
In this video, I dig into why this assumption isn’t just wrong — it’s ignorant, dehumanizing, and rooted in a deeply distorted view of what atheists are and what morality is.
We talk about:
• what conscience actually means (using real definitions, not apologetics slogans)
• the difference between immoral and amoral — and why Christians often confuse them
• why claiming atheists have “no morals” is basically accusing us of psychopathy
• how moral frameworks develop without religion
• why human societies create ethics — with or without gods
• why “survival of the fittest = murder everything” is a cartoon version of reality
• and why Japan’s low crime rate blows this argument to pieces
We also look at the Romans passage the commenter cited… which (ironically) admits that people without religion still act morally — because conscience is part of being human, not part of belonging to a church.
Along the way, we dig into:
• empathy
• autonomy
• social cooperation
• game-theory logic
• and why “not wanting to be murdered” is a pretty strong moral motivator
Turns out, you don’t need a divine surveillance system to understand right and wrong.
You just need to live in a world with other people.
If believing in a god helps someone behave ethically? Fine.
But pretending atheists are incapable of morality isn’t a defense of faith — it’s an insult to reality.
Atheists don’t “admit” to having a conscience.
We just… have one.
Because we’re human.
