Welcome back to God-Free Bible Study — I’m your host Adam of Nola, and today we’re wading straight into Deuteronomy 23–27, aka: the “welcome to the assembly… unless your body, ancestry, or nationality offends Yahweh’s vibe” section.
Before we get into the biblical chaos, quick channel update: I ran a poll (members vs non-members) asking which Skepticus series is your favorite — Breakdowns & Beatdowns, God-Free Bible Study, God’s Troll Army, or Cynical Sermons.

Which is hilarious, because these episodes usually pull 500–1,000 fewer views than some of the other formats. So apparently people love this series… they just don’t always show up on time. 😄 Either way: this was the flagship series when I built Skepticus, and it’s weirdly validating to see the loyalty.

What’s in this episode:
✅ Deuteronomy 23:
“Excluded from the assembly” laws that start with: no crushed testicles / no cut-off penis (because Yahweh needed a genital policy section)
multi-generation punishment for “illicit unions” (because nothing says justice like punishing someone for what their great-grandma did)
“Moabites and Ammonites are banned for 10 generations” …but the Egyptians who enslaved Israel get a shorter cooldown (make it make sense — it won’t)
wet dreams = ceremonial exile (sure, totally practical)
holy latrine laws because God is apparently checking your bathroom etiquette
“no interest on loans” economic advice from a deity who clearly never met capitalism
“you can eat your neighbor’s grapes but don’t bring a container” (the Bible: proudly inventing awkward property boundaries)
✅ Deuteronomy 24:
marriage/divorce laws that treat women like a transferable object with a “defiled” status
random “miscellaneous” laws that swing wildly between practical (pay workers daily) and unhinged (Miriam callback like, yeah, we meant that)
“leave some harvest for aliens/orphans/widows” — rare moment of actual decent social policy, with a side of dark comedy
✅ Deuteronomy 25:
legalized flogging for civil disputes (because beating people fixes everything)
levirate marriage: the “your brother died so now you’re assigned a wife” system, featuring zero consent and public sandal-shaming
and the all-time classic:
“If a wife grabs the opponent’s genitals during a fight, cut off her hand. Show no pity.”
The Bible: solving problems nobody needed solved.
✅ Deuteronomy 26–27:
long, scripted tithing recitations that sound like a ritual hostage statement
altar-building instructions with weird “no iron tools” rules
the 12 curses where the people chant “Amen” like they’re trapped in a creepy call-and-response cult meeting
