Welcome back to God-Free Bible Study — where we read the Bible exactly as written… and ask what actually makes sense.
In today’s episode, Adam of NOLA dives into Judges 4–6, and things somehow get even stranger:
We’ve got a prophet judging Israel from under a tree, a military leader who won’t go to battle without her, a brutal assassination involving a tent peg to the skull, and a victory song where people literally sing about themselves in the third person.
Oh… and then there’s Gideon — the guy who needs multiple custom-designed miracles just to be convinced God is real.
Totally normal stuff.
In this episode we break down:
• Deborah and Barak’s battle against Sisera (and why iron chariots only matter when it’s convenient)
• Jael’s infamous tent peg execution
• The bizarre and self-congratulatory Song of Deborah
• Continued evidence that Israel is not functioning as a unified nation
• The repeated cycle of: sin → punishment → crying out → rescue → repeat
• Midianite oppression and early examples of guerilla-style warfare
• Gideon’s calling… and his complete lack of faith
• God being tested repeatedly (and just going along with it)
• The fleece tests — where Gideon literally sets the terms and God complies

One of the biggest takeaways from this section?
The Bible repeatedly shows people:
• demanding signs from God
• questioning God
• negotiating with God
• even setting the rules for what counts as proof
…but if you try that today?
“Just have faith.”
If you’ve been following the series, you already know the pattern:
Israel screws up → God punishes them → they cry → God saves them → rinse and repeat.
But underneath that cycle, there’s a deeper issue:
They’re not a nation.
They’re 12 disconnected tribes who can’t act together — and it shows.
