Pastor Doug Wilson is out to make America Christian again – according to his own version of the faith – the U.S. Constitution notwithstanding.
For decades, Mr. Wilson was a Christian nationalist in a nation that paid him little heed. He insisted on holding beliefs that, each year, grew further out of step with the mainstream.
Yet the Idaho preacher is no longer a voice in the wilderness. In the 1990s, he counted three congregations in the Calvinist denomination he founded. He’s now at 170, with a global church body in the tens of thousands, including in Canada.
Developers are acquiring land in places such as rural Tennessee to build communities filled with people who share his views.
And Pastor Wilson’s influence now extends to Washington, where the congregation of a new church includes U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and more than a dozen members of the Trump administration.
