I traveled to Los Angeles, California, to take portrait photographs and visit friends. Using my Fuji GFX 50s and GF 32-64 zoom lens, I worked with Zoe at the abandoned old Los Angeles Zoo at Griffith Park, taking outdoor portrait photographs in existing light, basically also using window light and sunset (on a neat little trail). I embraced the film grain effect features in Capture One Pro Fuji (settings were Rough and with heavy impact and a middle size), and this also followed through another night when I photographed Jessica using blue hour and then a very dim lamp. The low light portrait photography was extremely challenging, but I also decided again to embrace the film grain effect.

Is it silly to use a digital medium format camera to make grainy photos? Well, no. Digital is merely a tool. One can make non-grainy photos on traditional analog photo equipment, too, but the aesthetic choice is almost always an option. I like the dreamlike feeling the soft focus and grain give these photographs. It's a little grit on the shiny veneer of Los Angeles. I enjoy how Capture One Pro employs its grain functions, and though I didn't talk about the specific settings, I ramped them up on these to make the effect especially noticeable on computer screens.
I also attended a screening of Carnival of Souls with a friend, wandered around town and took several street photographs with my iPhone XS. I could have used one of my larger cameras for this, but the size and look of the iPhone were well-suited for me to wander the city without feeling awkward or targeted.
