A single passage from Xunzi becomes the framework for mastering Chinese folk magic. In this lecture, we unpack the “Minister of Oracles” in the royal bureaucracy of early China and reveal how it encodes a five-step curriculum: reading yin-yang patterns, divining omens, casting hexagrams wielding the Five Arts, and the ability to discern whether a path will be auspicious or inauspicious.
Near the end we’ll also bring in Mencius and talk about human nature and the perennial debate over “white” vs. “black” magic.
