Located North West of Guangzhou city, is China's largest Fruit and Vegetable Market. I explored the massive market without a interpreter, so I was unable to understand what anyone was saying. With the help of a translating app, I did manage to work out that they only sold by the tray, pallet or truckload direct to smaller wholesalers or grocery shops all throughout China and neighbouring regions. Trucks would pull up full of fruit/veg and open their doors. Buyers would gather around and inspect the quality of fruit. Then a bidding process would occur and in some cases whole truckloads would be sold in 1 transaction.
I was hoping to find a grocery shop or stall nearby to buy some single varieties, but quickly came to realise this was only a Market for Wholesale sellers and buyers. Some of the outer stalls had individual mango's for sale, but they were only the damaged or overripe stock. There was no entry fee, and everyone was very friendly and polite. Beware of the motorbikes and carts everywhere, which are all 100% electric so you can't hear them if it were not for the constant beeping they do to let you know where they are going.
From the website ProduceReport they indicate in 2018 Jiangnan Market traded a total of 558 million tons of fruit and vegetable valued at USD 3.96 billion, representing an increase of 2.22% in volume and 1.94% in value over 2017.
