This is a step by step method at filling my raised garden beds cheaply by using a method called Hugelkultur. To save money I used logs from my recently pruned Olive tree, I then filled around the logs with shredded mulched branches and leaves.
Activation occurs by using liquid and powdered fertilisers which I drenched the timber and mulch in. Hoping they absorb as much of the fertiliser as possible, then slowly release back into the surrounding soil over time.
Next layer on top is the green weeds and pruned clippings. This will create a warm layer that will slowly help decompose the timber mulch and logs. Slowly releasing nutrients into the surrounding soil which the plant roots will absorb helping them grow.
On top of the Green layer we have the brown dried clippings, twigs an branches. This layer is already decomposed enough to cool and protect the plant roots from root burn from the green decomposing matter.
Last layer is your top soil / potting mix and then some compost on top. Veggies are planted on top.
The whole process is to help sustain moisture and nutrients in the soil, so you don't need to spend enough time or money in watering and fertilising plants.
