Chand Baori Stepwell - India's Most Beautiful Secret
Day 5 of my India adventure was long but full of history, culture, and inspiring experiences. We left Jaipur at 8.40am, coffee in hand, and headed toward Agra, feeling a little sleep-deprived but excited for the day ahead.
Our first stop was the incredible Chand Baori Stepwell in Abhaneri, about 90 km from Jaipur. This ancient stepwell is one of the largest and deepest in India, with 3,500 narrow steps arranged in a stunning geometric pattern. Historically, the royals used it as a summer retreat because it stayed cool and had a reliable water supply. We spent about an hour exploring, marvelling at the scale, symmetry, and intricate design.
After lunch, we continued to Jahangiri Mahal, part of the Agra Fort complex. Walking through its towering arches and peaceful courtyards felt like stepping into another era, and the architecture was absolutely stunning. The traffic into Agra was so bad that we abandoned the bus and walked the final stretch, which made arriving even more exciting.
Next, we visited Sheroes’ Hangout Café, run by survivors of acid attacks. The courage and positivity of the women there were incredible, and spending time with them was a real honour. We even got henna tattoos as a little keepsake.Sheroes’ Hangout Facebook: facebook.com/SheroesHangout
By the time we reached our hotel, I was completely exhausted. Our first room had a toilet that didn’t flush and a leaking sink, but thankfully we were moved to a much better room. After the henna, we called it a night — we had a 5.30am start the next morning for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal, so rest was essential.
