Chaga or True Tinder Fungus can be a very powerful anti-oxidant; in particular, extracts that are a combination of hot water and ethanol extraction were tested and found to have very high levels of anti-oxidant power. Since Chaga is a natural product, its properties can and will be different from one chunk to the next. Apart from that, unprocessed, non-extracted Chaga has almost no direct anti-oxidant power since it is indigestible for most humans. When the fungus infects a tree it takes another 3-5 years before the Chaga can be harvested. After harvesting, chaga can regrow to harvestable size again in three to ten years, and this can be repeated until the tree dies. Chopping off the Chaga does not stop the infection.
