Hello, I’m Chris Monikowski and I want to give you a brief overview of my chapter.
The project I discuss in this chapter really had two goals: first, I wanted to offer an online professional development opportunity to interpreters and second, I wanted to investigate whether that offering was successful and beneficial to the interpreters.
The professional development was focused on the concept of Role-space and I offered it to interpreters working in the post-secondary setting at Rochester Institute of Technology (from which I retired).
Five working interpreters participated in the PD event which spanned a full academic semester. Every week the interpreters had assignments: read a chapter, participate in online discussions, etc. They were also required to complete a final project, which required the interpreters to apply what we were discussing to their everyday class assignments and analyze whether their interactions with the other interlocutors were appropriate, if they could be improved, was the work that day successful.
My chapter includes direct comments from the interpreters that explain how they applied their knowledge of the concept of role-space to improve their everyday work. I think it is important to also comment that the success of this project definitely hinged on the time and energy commitment from all involved. Planning was important – for them and for me. Everyone has a busy life but we made it work.
Thank you!
