Probably the site of a Roman fortification, a small castle was built there in the 11th century as part of the defensive network of the Obertenga brand. However, it was the Marquises of Monferrato who built the current castle in 1488, also providing it with a ricetto. A fiefdom of the Doria, Trotti, Spinola, and then Adorno families, until the fiefdom was suppressed by the French republicans. With the Congress of Vienna it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
