THE FEASIBILITY OF MEASURING BLOOD VOLUME DURING LONG SPACE FLIGHTS

Carsten from University of Copenhagen and his team from University of Poitiers and ENSA - Ecole Nationale de Ski et d'Alpinisme are working on fascinating machines capable to analyze #astronauts' blood during long space flights
.
Short term space flight reduces red blood cell and plasma volume so that ultimately also total blood volume is decrease. With prolonged missions such as those planned to Mars blood volume may be reduced to such extend that manipulations may be needed to maintain a functional cardiovascular system. This would require the assessment of blood volume during space flight which to date has been deemed non-feasible

The team has developed the OpCO blood volume analyser which is the first CE conform and fully automated system that may overcome previous limitations.

While the OpCO’s functionality has been tested in various environmental conditions these do not include changes in microgravity. With the proposed research they wish to test the OpCO during parabolic flights in a first step towards blood volume measurements in space.
