đ„đ€Itâs quite understandable, burn wounds are some of the most common injuries during modern space travel. To date, wound healing of skin injuries in space represents a clinical challenge. Special skin grafts are often the only treatment option for extended burn wounds, but they are not feasible for long-term space flights. Artificial skin grafts are generated in vitro to mimic native skin, however it is not a viable solution here, due to weight and space restrictions. 3D bioprinting would offer a solution for future space missions. Which is exactly what Dr. Lutz Kloke, Bianca Lemke and Dr. Tobias Lam tested during the DLRâs 38th science flight campaign in Paderborn, Germany.
đ©șToday, Bianca Lemke, a Ph.D. student from Dr. Tobias Lam's team, explains the challenge of developing their "skin patch" solution and its printer. The skin patch is a piece of artificial skin printed on-demand in 3D for future space use.
