On August 28, 1959, former world champion Carmen Basilio faced the rugged Gene Fullmer for the vacant NBA World Middleweight Championship at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California.
The fight was a grueling, physical battle. Fullmer used his strength and mauling style to wear Basilio down, while Basilio fought back with his trademark pressure and determination. After 14 rounds of intense action, the ringside doctor stopped the fight due to severe swelling around Basilio’s eyes, awarding Gene Fullmer a TKO victory in round 14.
With this victory, Fullmer captured the middleweight crown, marking one of the defining wins of his career.
