Questioned about the latest assault-style firearms program (ASFCP) figures just hours before the program concludes, Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the program has received declarations for 57,000 firearms, putting the six-year, $1BN program roughly on par with the 56,000 firearms seized by the New Zealand gun ban upon which Canada's gun ban was modelled.
The difference? That while Canada spent 6 years and nearly $1BN targeting a potential 2M impacted firearms in a program that now claims just 57,000 voluntary declarations, New Zealand spent 6-9 months and $120M targeting just 174,000 impacted firearms to arrive at largely the same volume of firearms confiscated as Canada has seen declared for future confiscation.
The inevitable conclusion is that the ASFCP has been vastly less efficient than that which it was modelled on, and puts it on track to become a policy and programmatic failure that will likely eclipse even the Long Gun Registry.
