Can ordinary opal carving tools and polishing powder remove scratches from plastic?
In this experiment, I use the same sandpaper burrs and polishing powder normally used for carving and polishing opal to see whether they can restore a scratched piece of plastic. I work through the scratches step by step, then polish the surface to see how clear and glossy it can become.
This is a simple workshop experiment using lapidary techniques for an unexpected material. The results may be useful for hobbyists, restorers, makers and anyone interested in scratch removal or polishing plastic.
The plastic, tools and polishing products shown may produce different results depending on the type of plastic and the depth of the scratches.
