Is opal really a good investment, or is that just a popular belief within the gemstone industry?

After a decade of cutting, collecting, buying, and holding opal, I share my personal thoughts on investing in opal as an everyday person. Inspired by a recent discussion from Black Opal Direct, I look at supply and demand, liquidity, high-grade versus low-grade stones, retail pricing, valuation certificates, and how opal compares with other investments such as stocks, ETFs, property, and precious metals.
