KULT News visited Bremerton, Washington on June 13, 2024 and had multiple people call 9-1-1 on us for aiming our cameras at a bank. One man, seemingly a military veteran, was adamant that it was “against the law” to photograph him in public without his permission.
Would the responding law enforcement officer, a Sargent, recognize and respect our rights or would he violate our rights?

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
