KULT News visited the "Land of Lincoln" on Dec. 20, 2023 (with a side trip to St. Louis, MO) and we found a bank Karen and a local cop who both seemed to think consent was required to photograph people in public. Of course that's crazy talk so we were more than happy to set them straight.
Would our rights be violated or would the ignorant cop take the walk of shame?

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
