On Monday 20 December we attended the latest preliminary hearing of the Sally Maaz inquest. Sally, a local Leaving Cert student, died tragically at Mayo University Hospital in April 2020 after hospital staff moved her to a Covid ward even though she had tested negative for Covid.
A key event in the days leading to her death was a decision by the Castlebar hospital to change Sally's medication which she had been taking for 17 years. Sally was also administered a drug which provoked an allergic reaction, causing choking, vomiting and clotting of the lungs. At the same time MUH was relentlessly testing Sally for 'Covid', finally getting a positive result after the fourth test.
Sally phoned her mother in distress in the Covid Ward around midnight on 15 April. She cried out for help and told her mother no nurses would come when she called.
The hospital informed the Maaz family that Crumlin Hospital (where Sally's pediatric cardiologist had known her case for 17 years) had approved the change in Sally’s medication.
Four days after Sally died, her Crumlin doctor called the Maaz family. They were shocked to find out that he didn't even know Sally was admitted to Mayo University Hospital, never mind approve a change in medication.
The above raises grave and crucial questions. Why was the extraordinary decision made to change Sally's medication after 17 years? Who at MUH made this decision? Is this part of a HSE 'Covid policy'? Why did the hospital aggressively test Sally for Covid and place her in a Covid Ward at the same time they changed her medication and administered a drug causing vomiting and clotting in the lungs? And why did the Crumlin doctor completely contradict the version of events from MUH?
These questions, which have serious implications for all of us, must be addressed by the inquest into Sally Maaz’s death. The agreement therefore by the Coroner for Mayo Patrick O'Connor, and Callan Tansey Solicitors, not to call the Crumlin doctor to give evidence at the Swinford inquest is shocking and unacceptable.
🔴 Cllr Michael Kilcoyne has called for a 'public inquiry' into 'Covid' deaths at Mayo University Hospital. As Mr Kilcoyne knows, a public inquiry will last indefinitely, with huge cost to the taxpayer and ultimately no accountability whatsoever. While calls such as these may sound impressive to the unsuspecting, Cllr Kilcoyne has consistently failed to press the HSE on the threatening and silencing of staff at MUH. What is needed is not a whitewash of an 'inquiry' - the gag of hospital staff by Hospital Manager Catherine Donohue must be lifted. The staff of the hospital must be able to speak out without threat of dismissal.
🔴 Over the past 19 months thousands of elderly, vulnerable people have died cruel and inhumane deaths behind closed doors in hospitals and nursing homes. While lives have been and continue to be lost in appalling circumstances of cruelty and neglect, the greatest bystander is the Church. In the face of crimes against the elderly and vulnerable, and the gagging of hospital staff, the priests, bishops and cardinals are silent. The true Church is that which speaks up for the voiceless and abused, defending the oppressed like the Good Samaritan, while others with a religious profession may 'pass by on the other side'.
