Throughout the campaign we have seen attacks on Heather Humphreys because of her religion and cultural background.
We have also been made aware of an email from a priest to his congregation, urging them to spoil their votes and saying that “catholic candidates” are required.
It is a dark day in modern Ireland when a candidate is targeted and abused for these reasons.
A spoiled vote is a vote for Catherine Connolly. It is deeply alarming if the organisers of the “spoil the vote” campaign would rather have a communist and a friend of terrorists in Áras an Úachtarán, because the better candidate happens to be of a different religious belief or cultural background.
