From the CBC Vancouver 1972 TV series The Irish Rovers, Bobby Darin sang the Tim Hardin song, If I Were a Carpenter. He started his career as a songwriter for singer Connie Francis and he recorded his first million-selling single "Splish Splash" in 1958 and followed up with "Dream Lover", "Mack the Knife" and "Beyond the Sea". He and Connie were romantically involved till her father broke it up and she has been reported as saying that not marrying Bobby was the biggest mistake of her life. He continued to have numerous pop and country hits. He later turned to acting and in 1963, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a shell-shocked soldier in "Captain Newman, M.D.". At the Cannes Film Festival he won the French Film Critics Award for best actor!
