With the launch of BMW i3 series production today, the BMW Group ushered in a new era in automobile design. The outcome of a comprehensive development strategy aimed at lowering fuel consumption and emissions in urban areas is the first premium electric car in the world to be specifically developed for this type of drive system. The choice of materials and production techniques used have also met very high criteria of sustainability and resource efficiency. The use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in mass production for the automobile industry is new. This very strong and light material makes up the whole body structure of the BMW i3, canceling out the excess weight of the batteries for the electric motor system. The BMW Group is the first company in the world to make the use of CFRP in vehicle production economically viable by industrializing the CFRP manufacturing process.
