Our galaxy is 100k light years across. It has big black hole at the center which is called Sagittarius A*. When astronomers were studying it, they've found two giant blobs located very close to the Sagittarius A*.

The placement of these blobs was strange as they extended above and below the plane of the milky-way galaxy. Based on mathematical calculations, astronomers predicted that these bubbles were at least 18-34 million years old.

The two giant blobs were named "Fermi bubbles" as they were discovered with the help of the Fermi space telescope. These bubbles were first detected in gamma-ray light and are so big that they stretches upto 1,400 light-years.
