VIDEO INFO: If you had to pinpoint Aerosmithâs commercial/cultural peak then this, I would contend, is it as MTV (who at the time had unparalleled global reach and influence as a media brand) marked their tenth anniversary by inviting a select handful of superstar musicians to record an original performance of a classic hit.
The likes of George Michael, Madonna, Michael Jackson and R.E.M. were judged sufficiently iconic and contemporarily relevant, especially by way of their video output, for an hour-long special interspliced with animation and celebrity interviews and whimsical introductions from Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise et al and broadcast on 27 November 1991.
And Aerosmith objectively stole the show courtesy of this collaboration with Michael Kamenâs Orchestra, a special rendition of their first classic hit âDream Onâ recorded in their home city of Boston at the Wang Theatre (aka Boston Music Hall/Boch Center) in front of an audience of invited guests and fan-club members.
Thereafter this performance garnered heavy rotation as an MTV video and the audio was one of the many bizarre features of Arnold Schwarzeneggerâs 1993 flop âLast Action Heroâ, one of those projects where the soundtrack, as exemplified by AC/DCâs superb âBig Gunâ single, was markedly better than the movie.
