VIDEO INFO: This is from a session on French TV show ‘Bouton Rouge’ (which I think roughly translates as ‘Purple Trombone’ or ‘Rusty Helmet’) on Saturday 2 March 1968 and after a bit of digging and polishing I’ve managed to reunite the excellent colour footage with the original audio, rather than the ubiquitous studio overdub, which should be an absolute must when two such superlative voices as Stevie & PP are crossing streams.

⚠️ HEALTH WARNING: The show’s original sound engineer may not have shared my enthusiasm – it’s been sitting on my hard drive for nearly a decade, not out of neglect but in the hope that better software might come along. The entire audio/vocal track, especially Marriott’s feed, is all over the shop, showing the sort of EQ levels that would have DeForest ‘Bones’ Kelley gravely shaking his head and exclaiming “Jim, I don't even know their basic anatomy” which suggests there was a Sacré Bleu’ moment in the box when the needles hit red and prompted buttons to be frantically pressed.
Having laboured away on many an hour of compressed old fragments of 60s pop over the years, the stuff recorded for French TV always seems to be the worst – nevertheless, as one of the very few actual ‘live’ recordings of this definitive track around, it still conveys a sense of energy that mimed or overdubbed renditions rarely can.
