spookycookies | Beyond Two Souls: The Movie (The Memento Edit) @spookycookies19 | Uploaded May 2018 | Updated October 2024, 9 hours ago.
Inspired by a comment made by Matt during Super Best Friends Play Beyond Two Souls about the nonlinear structure of that game, this is a remake of part of Beyond Two Souls' story using the nonlinear structure used in the film Memento. More information on this video, as well as relevant links, can be found below.
I really had fun working on this project. I hope you like it.
***Important Note***
If you stick around for the ending credits, I show some behind the scenes handwritten notes and diagrams detailing how this idea evolved from idea conception to what you see in the video. I'd recommend watching on a screen bigger than a phone for those handwritten notes and diagrams to be more visible.
------------------------------
A.) Origin of this Project:
Like I mentioned above, this was an idea inspired by the comment Matt made during the LP, referencing the incoherent nonlinear timeline, that:
"This strikes me as someone who didn't understand Memento."
I was also inspired by similar complaints made by others, as well as that I also felt the story was trying and failing at being Memento-like.

B.) The Hunted-Homeless Arc:
Using the game's entire story would not have worked for this project. To better match Memento's story pacing (which takes place over the span of a few days, as opposed to Beyond's many years) I needed a smaller arc within the larger story.
I eventually settled on using the Hunted scenes as the equivalent to Memento's motel flashback scenes, and the Homeless scenes as the reverse chronology scenes.
(in the end credits explanations, I talk about how during the initial tests of this idea, I thought that the Homeless to Navajo arc was the best arc to use. Over time, that arc wasn't coming together well, and I eventually discovered that the Hunted to Homeless arc was almost perfect for the Memento structure).
