Spring on the homestead is a strange thing. One day, the air hums with warmth, soft and full of promise, and the next, the wind has a bite to it that makes you pull your collar up and grumble about how winter never truly leaves. Today, I set out to tackle a long-overdue task—spraying the orchard. The peaches and apples have had a rough go of it over the years, producing just enough to keep us hopeful but never enough to call it a real harvest. So, armed with a bottle of copper fungicide and a prayer for calm weather, I waded through the shed, which, after a long winter, looks more like an old junk heap than a place of order.
The work itself is simple—prune a little, spray a little, and try not to let the wind steal all my good intentions. It’s the kind of task that feels satisfying, even if success won’t be certain for months. From there, it’s into the kitchen, where I settle into the rhythm of boiling eggs, making up some tuna salad, and mixing a batch of that almond flour cookie dough that’s just sweet enough to pass for a real treat. The pantry needed a bit of reorganizing—nothing makes you appreciate a well-stocked shelf like realizing you’ve run out of something you were sure you had.
By the end of it all, I’ve got food prepped for the week, a little peace of mind about the orchard, and a house that, for once, feels in order. The work never really ends, but that’s the beauty of it. It rolls along with the seasons, each task folding into the next, and in the middle of it all, you carve out time for a quiet lunch and the kind of satisfaction that only comes from getting things done with your own two hands.
