I spent the day flame weeding, digging out creeping Charlie, and pulling up landscape fabric that’s been down so long it practically had squatters’ rights. There’s something about returning to old beds—worn out from years of ambition and neglect—that makes you reckon with the kind of gardener you’ve been, and the one you still hope to be. It’s dirty work. Not the fun kind of dirty, either—more the slow, heavy, unglamorous kind that doesn't lend itself to before-and-after triumphs. But I’ve learned that these are the moments that teach the most. You figure out what compost is worth your time, what plants will thrive no matter how many times you forget to water them, and what mistakes you’d rather not make again. Somewhere in the middle of the sweat and the thistles, you remember that the hard things—if you let them—will shape you into a better gardener. Not perfect. Just better. And that’s usually enough ♥
