BCSC-Nairobi took place on 6 July and established a space for the African climate security community to convene, share and learn from existing tools, research and experiences in order to promote more and better context relevant, climate-security risk informed action in Africa. BCSC-Nairobi was intended to inform the climate security outlook for the Africa Climate Summit and Africa Climate Week (AWC 2023), which in turn informs the African regional position on climate ahead of COP28.

Taking stock of progress: Climate change and security in Africa

The aim of BCSC Nairobi is to identify joint priorities for action to address climate related security risks across Africa. Key to understanding this is the perspective of those from civil society who can represent the experiences of the communities most affected, including youth, marginalised groups, women and girls. This session is intended to set the stage and open the conference with these perspectives that are crucial to the debate but oftentimes overlooked. We aim to take stock of progress in terms of what has happened up until this point, what is happening and what needs to happen in the future to better address the risks posed by climate change to peace and security to affected communities in Africa. Whilst action will need to be catalysed through strong political leadership, we want to start the conversation with a focus on the perspectives of youth, women and civil society.

Speakers:
• Khouloud Ben Mansour, African Youth Ambassador for Peace, African Union Commission
• Alice Ruhweza, Senior Director, Policy Influence and Engagement, WWF
• Ali Mohamed, Presidential Advisor and Climate Envoy, Kenya
• Moderated by Janani Vivekananda, Head of Programme Climate Diplomacy and Security, adelphi
