The big problem with monopolies is that when there is a monopoly, you have no competition, so service ends up sucking...because you have nowhere else to go. Ruth Eckerd Hall is a monopoly in Clearwater for large venue musical acts. Monolpolies are illegal. Why does that matter? Because it hurts you, the customer or patron. It decreases the quality of the service you receive. Competition is mean to ensure proper service so that the business doesn't leave and go to one of the several other competitors.
By the way, there is NO WAY Coachman Park (mostly sod with a few palm trees and a cute playground, and the amphetheater cost $84M. I'd be hard pressed to see how it could get anywhere near $18M...even that seems like a stretch. So, where'd all the money go? Do the old mayor and former city manager and attorney have anything to do with it? How about the don't-know-the-law wanna-be-a-dictator city attorney? Is there anyone in the government that is not crooked and might take a look at this? Of is that notion just a total joke.
Love Coachman Park's Amphitheater, BayCare Sound, but Ruth Eckerd Hall runs it like it owns it, rather than as a contractor with the city to manage the events on behalf of the city. Keep the venue and the great bands! Lose Ruth Eckerd Hall. Give the contract to a local who doesn't hate the people of the community, who will hire local and put the money back into the city!
