The Excel 9 class elective, Battles That Changed History, discusses the Battle of Issus in 333bc. The students already learned about the ancient Greeks and the use of the phalanx. The emphasis today was the impact that a leader can have on the course of a war. We started with a discussion of the rise of Macedon and Philip II. The students were well-versed in the Persian method of warfare as it was similar to that used in our earlier discussion of Marathon and Thermopylae (not taped as it was during the regular class). I had to simplify things due to the age and experience of some of my charges but they do a great job.
