Spirit duplicators were a common thing in schools in the days before photocopiers and laser printers - often referred to as Banda machines or Ditto machines, even though those two names were only brand names. My spirit duplicator is a Fordigraph Consul Super, made in England in 1969. Many people will remember being handed class notes and immediately sniffing the paper - this was due to the fact that the paper had been soaked in alcohol (mostly Methanol) during the printing process, in fact, the room where the duplicator was used could be quite toxic, and the process would probably be deemed unsafe these days.
The spirit duplicating process was invented by Wilhelm Ritzerfeld in 1923 and carried on being used right into the 1980s when photocopiers became common (and affordable).
