Provisioning covers the entire lifecycle management of network devices. It adds/decom capacity, keeps the network up-to-date, and sets the foundation for efficient and reliable network operations. To keep up with the growth of the network at scale, provisioning must leverage the power of automation. This talk lays out the concept and goals of provisioning, explains the critical components, and elaborates on the critical principles of automation. In particular, a case study is used to explore the practice of provisioning automation at Meta, including specific technical details such as major modeling data, bootstrapping, OS upgrade, config generation and push, and some open source software being adopted. The talk will help the audience develop a deep understanding of provisioning automation, connect with Meta’s real-world experiences, and leave with inspiration to innovate in this domain.
Kang Xi: Kang Xi is a network engineer and tech lead at Meta, where he has been driving major projects in network provisioning and delivery. His expertise spans multiple areas, including modeling, automation, reliability, and new product introduction. Before joining Meta, Kang had a diverse career that included positions as an engineer at Google X, ONAP, and AT&T, as well as a faculty at New York University.
