In the days of the "Wild West", young men from cities in the east made their way west looking for adventure working as cowboys. The regular western cowboys looked upon them as being sissies because of their pale skin colour and their smell, the easterners being used to wearing toilet water often scented with lavender. They were referred to as "Lavender Cowboys".
This song is about one such who "wanted to follow the heroes, and do what the he-men do"!
