Meltdowns, shutdowns, and burnout are often talked about like they’re the same thing — but they’re not.
In this video, I’m sharing how I understand and explain these experiences based on lived experience, conversations in the community, and patterns I’ve seen — not as a universal definition for every autistic person.
Because the truth is: if you’ve met one autistic person, you’ve met one autistic person. These terms are helpful, but they’re not rigid — and they’re meant to be used with flexibility, nuance, and a lot of grace.
We’ll cover:
👉 What autistic meltdowns are (and common triggers)
👉 How meltdowns can present in different ways
👉 What shutdowns are and how they differ from meltdowns
👉 Common misunderstandings
👉 What autistic burnout is
👉 Causes and symptoms of burnout
👉 Simple comparisons to help tell them apart
👉 Practical coping strategies
If you’ve ever wondered, “What is happening to me right now?” — this is a starting point to help you understand your own experience a little better.
