1689 Confession Study | Chapter 18 – Assurance of Grace and Salvation
Taught by Pastor Nathan Hargrave
Join us as we continue our Wednesday night study through the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, examining Chapter 18: Assurance of Grace and Salvation.
In this lesson we will consider an important question for every Christian: Can a believer have true assurance that he belongs to Christ? The confession carefully explains how assurance is grounded in the promises of God, produced by the work of the Holy Spirit, and strengthened through the ordinary means of grace. We will also address how assurance can be weakened through sin and neglect, yet restored through repentance and renewed faith.
This study will walk through the biblical foundations behind the confession and explore passages such as:
• 2 Peter 1:10 – “Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.”
• Romans 8:15–16 – The Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
• 1 John 5:13 – “That you may know that you have eternal life.”
Our goal is not merely theological clarity, but pastoral encouragement. True assurance produces peace, joy in the Holy Spirit, love for God, and strength in obedience.
