The Lawlessness of Legalism and the Governance of Grace
Acts 22:22–23:11

Legalism presents itself as devotion to righteousness, but it is always inconsistent. In Acts 22:22–23:11, we see religious leaders willing to break the law to preserve their own righteousness, condemn in others what they excuse in themselves, and change their demands whenever their own interests are threatened.
But the gospel gives us something entirely different. Christ fulfilled the law for us, bore condemnation in our place, and secured his people by his own righteousness. Because of grace, we no longer obey in order to earn God’s favor; we obey out of gratitude because, in Christ, his favor has already been given.
