Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | Are There Any Male Tea Ceremony Masters? #Shorts @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 7 hours ago
From the images you see of tea ceremonies you might feel that it’s mainly done by women, but it was originally a culture for men. Before the Meiji Restoration (Westernization), women were hardly allowed to be in the tea room, and it was a privilege of men in the high rank. So it might be surprising but even today the head masters of each tea ceremony ryuha (school/style) are actually all men.

Then why are about 90% of trainees today women? There are said to be two main reasons why.

First, the modernization of Japan in the 20th century abolished the strict social class system, helping to allow more people into the culture of tea. Second, tea ceremony began to be taught among women as a way for them to learn manners and etiquette (along with calligraphy, flower arrangements, etc.).

Due to the drastic changes in society, the leaders of the tea ceremony probably had to make some changes in the culture in order to carry on the tradition.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know about the tea ceremony, please let me know in the comments!
