During the Edo period,samurai were required by law to carry a long and short katana on their waists. In the early Edo period, long swords were as long as 3 shaku and short swords were as short as 2 shaku, but by the end of the Edo period, long swords were as short as 2 shaku 3 sun and short swords were as short as 1 shaku 6 sun.
Why did the Samurai become fond of shorter katana? The answer is… During the peaceful Edo period, the katana became just an ornament.
During the beginning of the Edo period, due to the remnants of the post Sengoku war era, samurai still used long katana as a symbol of strength.
But of course, a long sword was likely to hit another samurai's scabbard and such, and this would often start a fight. The shogunate made a rule and defined how long the katana can be, and forced samurai to walk on the left side to avoid bumping each other.
Due to the 2 centuries of peace of the Edo period, the symbol of strength among the samurai came to be more about status than military power. A long sword that was rarely used was just a nuisance.
