Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | Is it Rude to Spend Too Much Time in an Onsen? #Shorts @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 11 hours ago
No, it is not rude, but it’s not healthy for you. Onsen have various health benefits, but too much time spent in them can lead to physical exhaustion from getting too hot, which can have the opposite effect.

If the hot water temperature is around 38~40°C, 15 to 20 minutes is recommended, and if the temperature is 42 or higher, 10 minutes would be enough. When you stay at a ryokan with a nice onsen you might want to take a bath many times, but it is best you keep it to maximum of 3 times a day.

Many Japanese people also tend to think that the longer and more you enter the onsen, the better, but that’s a myth. When my family visited a ryokan with onsen when I was a child, my father often told me that it’ll be a waste of the occasion if I get out of the bath too quickly. But if you start to feel tired there is nothing wrong with leaving early.
