So I found this T-shirt on sale on Instagram the other day. RONIN! I can understand that you are imagining the independent and lone warrior when you use this word.

I have no right to say anything about people’s fashion, but I personally think that you need to be careful when wearing this in front of Japanese people. It’s because the image of “ronin” is very different among Japanese people.

Ronin originally means someone who has lost his occupation and is roaming to survive. So today, we use this word to refer to students who have failed the entrance exam to get into a university and have to study for another year.

Because they are not high school students anymore but don’t have a job either, they have to write that they are “without an occupation” whenever they write any forms, which is exactly a ronin.

So ronin t-shirts sold in Japan look very different…
