If you watch a sumo match, you’ll always find the referee called “行司 Gyōji” standing in between the wrestlers. They wear traditional clothing from the Heian period, and even have a tantō (short katana) on their waists.
When will a referee ever use a sword? To stab people who are dissatisfied with their decisions? No I’m just kidding, it’s actually just for seppuku (harakiri).
Just like the sumo wrestlers, the Gyōji have ranks too, and only the top rank called “Tate-Gyōji” carry tantō. So this tantō is a statement of determination to "take responsibility and commit seppuku" if a misjudgment is made. Fortunately though, there has never been a Gyōji that had to cut his stomach.
Just like the Tachi the Yokozuna brings to the ceremony, the katana is a special item that represents the pride of the Gyōji too.
